CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
A SHARP pain pieced my back as something struck me, pushing me harshly out of the way. I slammed against the doorway, and I hit my shoulder so hard I heard the bone crunch.
And felt it too. Bones weren't supposed to scrape that way.
A fluorescent tentacle hit the spot where I'd been just a nanosecond before, and I watched as Caine's glowing sword slashed through it, splashing viscous green slime everywhere.
A drop splattered on my arm. I tried to shake it off, but it ate right through my jacket and started freeze-burning through my skin.
"Get back, Claire," Caine shouted, slashing through another limb. "Use the emergency exit."
"I can't leaveâ"
He turned toward me, blue eyes flashing. "Don't be an idiot. It only takes one victim, so it will leave once it kills me. Tell Eileen what happened and have her seal the room. Permanent containment. She'll know what that means." Another slash. "Go."
I backed toward the exit, unsure what to do. I didn't want to leave Caine, but the creature's chill had spread through the storage room, causing the temperature to drop by several degrees. The heat emanating from the emergency exit was so temptingâ
Wait, heat from the exit?
I turned to look at the exit door. The metal was bright red, and the middle of the door seemed to be melting.
"Caine," I screamed, "incoming!"
He stabbed a stray tentacle, then looked back. Eyes wide, he ran out of the room.
"Closet," he shouted. "To your left."
A green limb wrapped itself around his leg and he grimaced in pain. I aimed my sword in the tentacle's general direction and stabbed hard.
The appendage melted into a pile of goo.
But before I could celebrate, Caine pushed me into a supply closet and slammed the metal door shut behind us.
"Stay as far away from the door as you can," he grunted. "If I'm right, we're between a rock and a hard place." His lips bent into a crooked smile. "Actually, I guess it's a flame and a cold place. Or maybe an iceberg and a hot place."
"What does that even mean?" I whispered. "What's happening to the exit? We shouldâ"
But then a loud metallic sound made my ears ring. Something was banging on the door, ice crystals spreading from each indentation in the metal. The noise was deafening in the small space.
"Knock, knock," Caine muttered under his breath. "Who's there? Fire. Fire who?"
Knock, knock jokes? Seriously?
An explosion in the hallway pushed him against me, so I was sandwiched between his way-too-heavy body and the closet shelving. The pommel of his sword dug into my sore leg. A wave of heat swamped our tiny refuge, and the ice crystals instantly evaporated.
"Fire are you waiting for?" Caine continued, but I could barely hear him. The noise from the explosion had affected my hearing.
"Get the extinguisher," he chuckled, finishing the lame joke.
Great, the avocado squid would suck the life out of me and my last memories would be bad jokes, the incoming heat smoldering the closet, and a sweaty biker with a ginormous sword.
